The Dachshund was originally bred as a hunter used to pursue badgers. The word Dachshund literally
means "Badger Dog." Dachshunds come in two sizes, the popular Miniature and the Standard. They
also come in three coat types including, smooth, long haired and wirehaired.

Dachshunds are happy dogs bursting with personality. Despite their short legs, they are playful, active
and always ready for a walk. Dachshunds are known to be stubborn which can make them difficult to
train, however, with a patient, yet firm owner training is not impossible! These dogs are very devoted and
loyal. They love companionship and being part of a family. They are known "barkers" and will bark and
whine if left alone for long periods of time.

Because of their long spinal columns, Dachshunds are prone to back injuries. It is recommended that
they do not jump and should take stairs slowly. This, however, does not mean that the Dachshund does
not need exercise! Regular walks are a must in order to keep your "Hot Dog" fit and healthy!

The Dachshund is a perfect family dog. They do well with children, however, in order to avoid back
injury, children should be taught how to handle the Dachshund properly. This dog is perfect for
apartment and city living, but of course, would do just as well in a country setting.
