Dog Breed Information
Jack Russell Terrier
Alternative Name: Parson Russell Terrier
Country of Origin: Great Britain
The Jack Russell Terrier takes its name from the Reverend John
Russell who bred a strain of Terriers for fox hunting in Devonshire,
England in the late 1800s. The Jack Russell Terrier that we know
today is very much the same as the original Terrier that Reverend
Russell bred.
This breed of Terrier is small to medium in size, sturdy and muscular.
They are 10 to 15 inches in height, weigh 13 to 17 pounds and live 13
to 15 years.
Jack Russell Terriers are playful, energetic companions who enjoy life! They are usually
all white in color or white with black, tan, or lemon markings. They have either smooth or
rough coats and are easy to groom.
Jack Russells are lively dogs who must be socialized with other
dogs early. They have very strong chasing and hunting instincts so
daily walks and exercise are a must! Off leash walks are not a
good idea as these little pups will chase anything and everything
they come across. Before you know it, you will find yourself
chasing and trying to catch your energetic friend! Jack Russell
Terriers are ideal for country living, however, they can adapt to an
urban lifestyle as long as they get their daily exercise.
Training a Jack Russell Terrier can be done but it is not always easy! These stubborn and
mischievous dogs need an owner who is willing to be firm, patient and consistent!
