The Shih Tzu is a small, sturdy, well balanced dog that is slightly longer than it is tall. They are
highly sociable and affectionate animals bursting with personality. The Shih Tzu is a wonderful
companion but a poor choice if you are looking for a hiking partner or a dog to play frisbee with.
These dogs are highly adaptable, happy to recline on the couch or go for a country walk.

The Shih Tzu comes in several colors such as gold, black, gray, silver, and brindle. They are 8 to
11 inches tall and weigh 9 to 16 pounds. These little dogs require an ample amount of grooming
time. Regular brushings and baths are a must in order to keep the Shih Tzu's coat healthy and
tangle free. A neglected coat causes mats which can lead to skin problems and discomfort.

This breed is ideal for anyone that wants a happy, playful companion. However, the Shih Tzu is a
strong minded, often stubborn dog and needs a patient, consistent owner when it comes time for
training and obedience. If allowed, these little dogs can easily become household tyrants! With
the proper care and training the Shih Tzu is playful, loving and friendly. They are small but not
necessarily fragile dogs. If socialized properly they get along well with other dogs as well as
children.
