If you have a child, most
likely, one of your main
goals in life is to raise that
child to be a decent, caring
and responsible human
being. Need some help
with that huge task? Why
not get a dog!? Dogs teach
responsibility, patience and
sensitivity. Children also
learn the importance of
diet, health and exercise!
Most children form loving
bonds with their dogs and
even learn the value of
friendship. Children who
train their dogs and teach
them tricks take pride in
their accomplishments!
Can you think of a better
way to learn teamwork? So
next time your child begs
for a dog...think
twice...maybe it's not such
a bad idea after all!

As you know, it is very important to wear your seatbelt
when traveling in your car. Seatbelts protect not only
you, but your family as well. Most people consider
their dogs family members...so shouldn't they buckle
up too? YES! YES! YES! Properly fastening your
pooch into their seat can save their life if an accident
should occur. A large variety of canine restraints are
available for purchase. You can even buy car seats
especially designed for small dogs! So be safe rather
than sorry and strap your pooch in the next time you
hit the road!
Buckle Up!

The Old English Sheepdog
Country of Origin: Great Britain

The old English Sheepdog was developed in the late nineteenth century as a herder and livestock
guardian. They are large, strong dogs with square proportions. They are 21 inches in height (some
may be taller), weigh 60 to 100 pounds and live 10 to 12 years.

These boisterous, hairy dogs are good natured and playful. They require a lot of maintenance and
need a lot of physical and mental exercise.

Old English Sheepdogs require a LOT of grooming! They need to be brushed three to four HOURS
a week. If their hair is not combed out frequently, it mats into lumps that can be very difficult to
remove. Professional grooming is highly recommended for this breed.

Old English Sheepdogs thrive as family dogs and are great playmates for older children. They are
too big and bouncy for households with toddlers or frail, elderly people.

These dogs need active owners who love to go for long walks and have plenty of time for training.
This dog is not ideal for people who are out all day as they thrive on company and will be miserable
if left alone for long periods of time. Old English Sheepdogs usually get along well with other pets,
however, small pets are always in danger of getting squashed!

Meet Lucy Liu...our
Dog of the Week!
Maybe I should say
Puppy of the Week as
she is only three
months old. Lucy lives
in Pennsylvania and is
simply ADORABLE!
Just look at that face!
Still Fat!
Oh no! A recent study
published in the Journal of
Veterinary Internal
Medicine reports that
between 22 and 40 percent
of dogs are obese! That is
HUGE (no pun intended).
Many dogs that are
overweight suffer from
serious heart problems and
diabetes. They also tend to
have a decreased tolerance
of heat and less stamina.
Labradors, Beagles, and
Cocker Spaniels are three
breeds that tend to put on
the pounds easily. Do your
pup a favor and keep him
happy and healthy!
Avoiding obesity is a very
important part of the
over-all wellness of your
dog.

The Best Friends Animal

“No More Homeless

the second I read about
it! At the conference they
teach the latest and
greatest lifesaving
programs including how
to best educate the
public about the
importance of spaying
and neutering. They also
have several guest
speakers. This year,
puppy mills will be a huge
topic of discussion along

Kelly works on a ranch in Wyoming. She was feeling a bit down because her beloved Basset
Hound had recently passed away and her Mom wasn't too keen on the idea of getting another
dog. Little did Kelly's Mom know, but another pup was about to enter her life!

One day while at work, Kelly's boss approached
her and asked if she wanted a dog. Kelly didn't
think twice. They drove up the highway to where
the puppy had been playing on the side of the
road and sure enough, she was still there. With
a little coaxing, Kelly was able to get the puppy
into the car. She was bit nervous about what her
Mom would say when she brought home a new
dog but she couldn't leave the helpless puppy by
the highway. All of Kelly's worrying was for
not...one lick on her face and her Mom was
sold! Lucky is just that...Lucky! She now has a
forever loving home with a family that loves her.
It is not uncommon for Kelly to see abandoned dogs on the side of the road. Many of the dogs
don't survive and fall victim to the many cars and trucks that travel the highway each day. As
Kelly says, "It is simply aggravating that somebody would dump a dog on the side of the road.
Unloading a pet is one of the cruelest things a person can do, not to mention a traumatizing
experience for the dog." Thanks to Kelly, Lucky wasn't a victim...she was...well, Lucky!
Thanks, Kelly!
Lucky is now a loving member of the family!
Petey - A Cocker That Needs a Home!
Petey is a 3 year old Cocker Spaniel that was given up by his family because their child
developed allergies. Poor Petey! He was dropped at the “pound” alone and confused. Thankfully,
the good folks at Oldies but Goodies Cocker Spaniel Rescue found Petey and he is now in a
foster home patiently waiting for a new family to adopt him. If you love Cocker Spaniels and live
in Northern Virginia or Maryland, won’t you give Petey a chance? He would do best with a loving
yet firm owner...who is willing to train Petey to be the best dog he can be! For more information,
please click HERE! A special “Thank You” goes out to Ann who has been following Petey’s
progress and only wants the best for this cute and friendly Cocker.

Saving the environment is on the minds of many. It is a topic
discussed among politicians, in the newspapers, at home,
and in the workplace. The Kong Company has taken notice
and has come out with a line of environmentally responsible
cat toys and scratchers. Their catch phrase is: “Natural
Products for Natural Instincts.” All of the products are made
from eco-friendly, natural and renewable resources (such as
feathers and straw). All of the products are also veterinarian
and kitty approved. Way to go, Kong! A company that cares
about the environment and animals…wonderful!

Review: The Bubble Buddy
Beef scented bubbles just for dogs!
When I heard about the Bubble Buddy for dogs I knew I had to try it. What could be better
than beef scented bubbles!? Hours of fun, Right!? Unfortunately, as hard as I tried, I could
not get the dogs interested. Sure, they chased a bubble or two but they didn't romp and
play for hours as the box said they would (it was more like 10 minutes). I didn't expect
Bunny Roo to chase the bubbles, afterall, she is 90% blind and doesn't chase anything.
She did, however, show more interest than the other dogs and at one point tried to eat the
bubble gun. That's Bunny Roo for you....always trying to chow down on something! I guess
she got a nose full of beef scent when a bubble accidently popped on her nose! Speaking
of the beef scent.....ewwwwww! Personally, I didn't think the bubbles smelled like beef at
all. I can't even think of a word that does describe what they smelled like. If you have a
highly energetic dog you might want to try the Bubble Buddy. If not, don't waste your
money....go buy a Frisbee instead!
Rating:
Kiwi, not really interested in the beef scented bubbles!
Bunny Roo bites the bubble gun.
And they're off……no, not horses….Chihuahuas! In August, this
little breed will be racing for the title of “Fastest Chihuahua in the
Country” at the fourth annual National Chihuahua Races. PETCO
Park in San Diego will host the event on August 31, 2008. So make
a day of it, bring the family and get there early! For more
information about this event, please visit www.petco.com and
